Why is the flag at half-staff today?
Filed Under Current Events | 6 Comments
At a cemetery along I-280 near Daly City, CA, the main flag pole is flying the US flag at half-staff. Why? The flag flew at half-staff during January for the passing of President Ford. What does it honor today (Feb. 15, 2007)?

Can anyone suggest a restaurant in the East Bay that has food similar to Joe’s of Westlake in Daly City?
Filed Under San Francisco | 2 Comments
I really enjoy the food at Joe’s of Westlake but I’m looking for similar restaurants in Oakland/Alameda/East Bay without having to go all the way to Daly City. Anyone have favorite family type places similar to Joe’s of Westlake they’d recommend I try out? Thanks!

How Could you not Fall in Love With Paris?
Filed Under Destinations | Comments Off
I like Paris, I really do. From having spent some time there as a young student on holiday the memories are quite vivid and long-lasting.
From the usual sort of student things such as sitting on the steps of Sacre-Coeur nursing the obligatory monumental hangover from having been partying too hard the night before. Spending time in quiet reflection at such locations as the “Jeu de Paume.” Trying to get your head around the weirdness and wackiness of the likes of Dali, Magritte and Picasso after having savoured the serenity And peace of the likes of Monet and Camille Pissarro.
Certainly, all forms of life can be found in Paris. Like a great many other places France does have its socioeconomic issues to confront and like other places they cope too. There are places in Paris where you can forget about the hassles of day to day living and just revel in some of the glories and Splendour of day’s gone by.
Paris has that unique quality to it that puts most things into perspective. Alongside the dignity and Splendour of the more established Paris you have the bustling vibrancy of the new.
You have in Paris, some of the world’s most beautiful buildings and some of the most striking pieces of modern architecture. Just down the street from Elegance and Splendour you have buildings covered in bullet marks and fading plaster that obviously haven’t been looked at since 1945.
Yet stop and ask the typical Parisian why this is and certainly with regards to the fading plasterwork and bookmarks and like the madrilenos asked about some of Madrid’s fading glory they are just as likely to shrug their shoulders and indicate that there are actually more important issues in the world.
I am not about to argue with them on this point when indeed they may well be right.
Returning to the subject in hand of why I like Paris.
While it’s quite simple because Paris actually caters for everyone and achieves this without giving the impression of trying that hard. For the “culture vultures” amongst us you have some of the world’s finest museums and art galleries nicely complemented by some of the most beautiful architecture and “urban parkland” that you will find anywhere.
As has been said before, Paris has something for everyone, from the world’s largest museum, the Louvre to some of the less well known museums such as the “Musee National du Moyen-Age or the “Musee Carnavalet.” Relax and chill in some of the most beautiful parkland in the world such as “Le Jardin du Luxembourg” or “Le Garden des Tuileries” whilst your art loving partners browse the world famous artefacts of the Louvre!
A trip to Paris would not be complete without some time spent appreciating the awesome majesty of Notre Dame Cathedral or the Sheer beauty of Sacre-Coeur which if I am not very much mistaken was where we all came in!
Paris will certainly not disappoint.

Should a police officer gun to the head of a 20-year-old man in an effort to elicit information ?
Filed Under Law Enforcement Police | 9 Comments
A police officer faces felony assault charges after a colleague reported that he put his service gun to the head of a 20-year-old man in an effort to elicit information about an automobile theft, the Daly City Police Department reported.
San Mateo County prosecutors charged Alfonso Esqueda III, 32, last week with assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon and assault under the color of authority, all felonies.
Esqueda, who joined the Daly City force in September after working as a police officer in Long Beach, turned himself in Friday after authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest. He posted $100,000 bail and was released. He had been placed on unpaid leave during an internal probe by the Police Department.
An investigation by Daly City police and the San Mateo County district attorney found Esqueda used excessive force during the July 29 incident.
After allegedly holding the gun to the victim’s head, he drove the victim to another area in an effort to look for stolen vehicles, Daly City police Sgt. Carol Sloane said in a news release. The victim was later released uninjured.
A second officer saw the alleged assault and reported it to a superior, Sloane said.

Visiting New York City? Don’t Miss Out on Moma!
Filed Under Art And Entertainment | Comments Off
New York City’s countless splendours attract visitors in their millions each year. From iconic sights like Times Square and the Statue of Liberty to atmospheric NYC neighbourhoods such as Greenwich Village, Soho and Manhattan’s Theatre District, there’s always something to do or see in New York City!
But one of the city’s most prominent offerings is undoubtedly its art scene. From the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum to the Whitney Museum of American Art, art enthusiasts will always be able to find a remarkable gallery in which they can revel. But perhaps the most famous of New York’s array of museums is the Museum of Modern Art - affectionately known as MOMA.
Having opened in 1929 with only eight paintings and a drawing, MOMA has expanded over the years to encompass one of the most impressive collections of modern art. MOMA’s current 100,000-piece collection is comprised of some of the world’s most renowned modern art pieces, including works by iconic American painters Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. Visitors can also set eyes on some of the most celebrated international art pieces in the world, including ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’ and Frida Kahlo’s ‘Self Portrait with Cropped Hair’. Furthermore, MOMA’s photography collection is one of the most prominent anywhere, hosting works by important photographers like Cindy Sherman and Andreas Gursky.
But MOMA has retained its importance for more than just fantastic art. The museum’s intriguing architectural landscape and arrangement are also responsible for its acclaim. When MOMA first opened in 1929, it was situated on 5th Avenue - on the site of what is now the Empire State Building; and within the year, the museum had already stood in three separate locations. However, in 1931, it was moved to its current site, between 5th and 6th Avenue.
Between 2002 and 2004, MOMA was closed for renovation while its building was re-designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Taniguchi is the celebrated Japanese architect, also responsible for Tokyo’s Nagano Prefectural Museum and the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures at the Tokyo National Museum. When MOMA was re-opened in November 2004, Taniguchi’s redesign was initially faced with controversy; however, it has since been upheld as a bold example of contemporary architecture - making MOMA not only one of New York’s most intriguing landmarks, but also a piece of structural art that visitors can enjoy.
If you’re considering your options for travel to New York City, you’ll find a number of airlines that offer direct daily flights to New York from London - so reaching NYC’s countless splendours is easy!
So, if you’re planning a trip to New York City, don’t miss out on MOMA - you’ll see American and international modern art in a whole new light! And because MOMA is located close to the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can experience the best of New York City’s art scene with ease.
